Wondering what to do this summer? Thinking about looking for a job? Now is a great time to get ideas for what you could do and put in some job applications! But where to begin?

What kinds of jobs could I do with little or no work experience?

Ideas for first jobs
Get some great ideas and learn about jobs you could do, including:

  • Camp counselor
  • Car wash attendant

  • Food service: Dishwasher, servers, counter help
  • House painter

Where can I find those types of jobs?

Job Finder

  • At the Job Finder, enter a job title, like one of those above, and your city and state, or your ZIP code. You’ll see a matching list of job openings.
  • Click on the job title for details about the job. Click “Apply” to go to the employer’s website and fill out an application or upload your resume.
  • All the jobs you see listed are real and the postings are updated every day.

Business Finder

  • A great thing about contacting companies directly is that they may have job openings or internships they haven’t posted yet.    
  • The Business Finder can help you find potential workplaces.
  • Enter a job title or type of company you want to work for, and a location.
  • Read about the business, check out their website, and then use the contact information to email them or call to ask whether they have summer job openings.

Youth Employment Program Finder

  • Youth programs are sponsored by government and non-profits. Just enter your location to find programs nearby. All of them help youth to find jobs.
  • They are free to participants, and some have eligibility requirements. Contact the program to ask about who is eligible and application deadlines.

What do I need to know about job applications?

Practice Job Application

  • The Practice Job Application will ask you for all the information you’’ll need for real applications. Print out or download the form once you complete it; keep the form to look at for real applications.

Work documents

  • To apply for jobs, you’ll need some form of ID, like a driver’s license or birth certificate. A school ID does not qualify.  You’ll also need a Social Security number.
  • If you don’t have any of these, check out the State Resource Finder, enter your state, and look for the Documents and Vital Records tab for how to get these documents.

Interviews

  • Get ready for a job interview using these tips and practice questions.
